A star of the silent cinema C harles Spencer Chaplin, known as Charlie Chaplin, was one of the most creative personalities of the silent-film era. He was born in London in 1889. His parents were artists in a music hall, and he started his career as an actor in a musical, at the age of eight. From 1915 Chaplin wrote, directed, produced and acted in all his movies. His working life in entertainment lasted over 65 years, until his death at the age of 88. Among his most successful films there were Modern times (1936) and The Great Dictator (1940) where Chaplin played a caricature of Adolf Hitler. No doubt his most popular character was the Little Tramp , the man with a moustache, a bowler hat, a bamboo cane and a funny walk. Chaplin won many Oscar awards.
